about

Hey, kids! It's a Surprise Big Stir Single celebrating FUTUREMAN RECORDS! Whenever anyone asks “but is it power pop?”, your pals THE YES IT IS! have only one answer: yes it is! And the gang is ready for their big break, trying to land a track on the new tribute album from Futureman! But hold on... are they supposed to be doing a tune by power pop legends 20/20 or a classic by XTC? Looks like the kids are all mixed up! Tune in to their new single at bigstirrecords.bandcamp.com and see if they can sort it all out!

JIMMY is so excited about ACTION NOW: 20/20 RE-ENVISIONED (out this December on Futureman Records) that he's already learned the guitar part and words to “The Night I Heard A Scream”. But the drummer, SARA-MAE, thinks 2020 has been a bad year and she wants to do a tribute to 1970 instead! Seems like someone needs to brush up on their music history.

Meanwhile SALLY is all dreamy-eyed about doing a song by Andy Partridge, because The Partridge Family are just her fave raves! MUSHROOM MAX on the bass just rolls his eyes... he knows that Futureman's GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS: AN XTC CELBRATION came out back in March, but there's no stopping Sally when she wants to sing! Keyboard genius PROFESSOR POP-POP calculates that their odds are best if they just do both songs, and GOOBER wags his tail and shakes his maracas to the beat – he just wants his Gooby Snacks after the session!

But uh oh! This wacky bunch is so confused by the time they get to the studio that they get to the studio, they don't even know their Look Out! from their English Settlement! Time to call in the pros, since everyone knows THE YES IT IS! doesn't play their instruments on the records. That's why KAREN BASSET plays the drums, JULIAN MOSS (of CHARMS AGAINST THE EVIL EYE) takes over the bass, DOLPH CHANEY adds some guitar and vocals, and BLAKE JONES sings along on “Senses Working Overtime”... and PETER WATTS of SPYGENIUS mixes it all so nobody will ever know it's not really the gang playing! Pretty sneaky, huh?

And when it comes to “The Night I Heard A Scream”, well, it's everyone's buddy MICHAEL SIMMONS behind the board while MIRANDA BROOME sorts out the bass for Max (who is pretty much tripping balls by now anyway)! And who's that on the drums? Why, it's JOHN BORACK, who gives Sara-Mae a copy of his latest book so she can find out why 20/20 isn't a year, but the deserving winners of his “Best Power Pop Record” honor. That, and a few drum lessons, should set her straight!

Will THE YES IT IS! make the grade for the tribute album? No, they won't. But a lot of other great artists, like PLASTICSOUL, POPDUDES, THE BROTHERS STEVE, LIBRARIANS WITH HICKEYS , IRENE PEÑA and even THE ARMOIRES will. Looks like our gang will just have to order ACTION NOW and listen along with the rest of us. But at least Goober gets his Gooby Snacks for his efforts – hey, somebody learned their part! Tune in for more hijinks next week as THE YES IT IS! try to book an opening slot with Paul Collins, but end up at a Phil Collins gig instead – guess they should have seen that one coming in the air tonight!
