about

Detroit's POPULAR CREEPS return to kick off a season of anticipation for their forthcoming album on Big Stir Records with an all new single. “Gone By 45,” the first example of the record's muscular and melodic Midwestern pop-punk to hit the airwaves, is out and streaming everywhere this Friday, October 21, and up for pre-order at bigstirrecords.bandcamp.com now. It's the followup to the 2021 hit “Split Decision,” the single that landed the band a permanent slot on the Big Stir roster and kicked off the sessions resulting in the bracing and keenly-awaited new album, soon to be officially announced and due for release in early December.

POPULAR CREEPS -- Lenny Grassa (guitar, vocals), Andrew Colvin (guitar, vocals), Joe Heaphy (bass) and Dave Nantais (drums) – have risen quickly since their 2017 formation and their 2019 debut album Bloodshot Red. It's their timeless sound, live and on record – call it Heartland Punk, Northern Jangle, or maybe just plain Midwestern? -- that's kept the band on the airwaves of the global guitar pop scene throughout the pandemic era. “Gone By 45” shows just how the band has endured and grown stronger over those difficult times. Critics have noted that POPULAR CREEPS consistently evoke the heyday of the vibrant '80s college rock scene encompassing The Replacements, Hüsker Dü and R.E.M., and you can hear that loud and clear on the new track... but it's also fresh, modern, and as Grassa explains, heartfelt and personal:

“This song is a thank you note to my now departed best friend, Tom Payne. Besides being my best bud, he was also the bass player in our L.A. based band The Leonards. He had a way of bringing out your best by showing that he believed in you... even though he may not have always believed in himself. I probably wouldn’t have had the guts to sing if it were not for Tom. So… you can blame him! He was a man of contradiction but there was rarely a dull moment when he was around. Gone 17 years and I still miss him.”

As a tribute and as a galloping, cathartic rocker, “Gone By 45” is another rocking winner, joining last year's single “Split Decision” and its breakout hit-in-its-own-right B-side “Black & Blue” on the track listing for the forthcoming album. As the new track hits the airwaves at home and abroad, look for the popularity of POPULAR CREEPS to continue building on those sturdy foundations. The title of the album, ALL OF THIS WILL END IN TEARS, might reflect the emotional turmoil of the times, but the music on the album is a resounding triumph. Expect it, along with “Gone By 45”, to be greeted by fans and critics alike with cheers.
