about

When no less than the maestro behind the indelible riff to THE STANDELLS' “Dirty Water” joins forces with today's premiere purveyors of that same classic guitar rock sound, THE FORTY NINETEENS, the explosive results can't be kept in the garage for long. BIG STIR RECORDS is elated to announce “Late Night Radio”, the new single from THE FORTY NINETEENS WITH TONY VALENTINO, out Friday June 5 and up for pre-order now at www.bigstirrecords.com/big-stir-digital-singles and featuring the killer B-side “Crocodile Tears” from the band on their own.

TONY VALENTINO is the co-founder and original guitarist for THE STANDELLS, who should need no introduction. The '60s proto-punk legends have, for decades, owned everything they touch, from the underground (the original NUGGETS compilation and its essential expanded box set from Rhino) to the mainstream – who else appeared on The Munsters and cracked the Billboard Top 20 with a song that would go on to become the official anthem of every professional sports franchise in Boston? Tony himself grew up in the hills of a small Italian village, then found his way to California and became an integral part of the early 1960's LA garage rock scene. He's crossed paths with The Rolling Stones, Bing Crosby, The Doors, Dean Martin, and The Wrecking Crew, and performed on American Bandstand, Ben Casey, and in the counterculture classic Riot On Sunset Strip. His guitar work on "Dirty Water" is the garage rock template, and earned him the title "The Godfather of Punk Guitar”.

Meanwhile, THE FORTY NINETEENS have emerged as the true keepers of the garage rock flame, owning the airwaves coast to coast (and overseas) with a pair of albums and a string of singles including the recent “Tell Me” on Big Stir Records. Their own impressive pedigree includes members who've done time in Mary's Danish and The Leonards before coalescing as The Forty Nineteens and establishing themselves as darlings of Little Steven's Underground Garage on Sirius XM and an impressive clutch of radio outlets across the dial, the nation, and the world. BSR is doubly thrilled to have had a hand in this meeting made in high-octane rock heaven. The band explains:

“The Forty Nineteens were performing at the monthly Big Stir Burbank show in March of 2019. Many, many friends of the band showed up and it turned into quite an event. Drew Carey came to see them after playing the band several times on his Sirius XM Show The Friday Night Freakout. Legendary LA radio personality Poorman (Poorman's Morning Drive on KOCI) introduced the band, and brought his friend, Standells legend Mr. Tony Valentino, who had a blast watching the garage rock influences The Forty Nineteens brought to the stage. After meeting the band, Tony said he had a song for them to record. Upon hearing 'Late Night Radio' the band said, how soon? And then it all fell into place.”

“Late Night Radio” is every bit the classic flat-out rocker you'd hope for from this combustive collaboration. Tony tells of how he came to write it along with Dan Markell: “I met Dan at this event at the Catalina Club. I'd been invited and went with Rodney Bingenheimer (LA radio's tastemaker DJ for the ages). We were sitting at his table with Dan Markell  so we started talking and the rest is history.” Tony and The Forty Nineteens recorded 'Late Night Radio' at his Sausalito Studios. Drums, mixing and mastering were done at Paul du Gre's PMS Studio in Burbank. Paul has worked over the years with X, Los Lobos, and many other seminal LA punk bands.

With the session completed just before the nationwide lockdown and mixing just after, the single began to make “surprise” appearances on Rodney and Genya Ravan's Sirius XM shows and KKFI-FM in Kansas City . With new artwork from Joe Dunn (Florida Trailblazer) and a hook-heavy B-side in the form of “Crocodile Tears” from The Forty Nineteens' last LP Good Fortune, the full single is now ready to continue its conquest of late night – and all day – radio. Big Stir Records is honored to bring it to the airwaves where it belongs!
