BIG STIR RECORDS is super-thrilled to present “On Of Her Super Powers”, the lead single from the forthcoming new album Oh The Joys We Live For from ANTON BARBEAU. The all-new tune sees release on July 2, two weeks ahead of the CD and digital release of the album, which is already gaining notice as one of the legendary psychedelic troubadour's very best sets. The jangling “Super Powers”, adorned with a newly minted photo of pandemic-era Anton at his most fetchingly purple, is one of the most rocking tunes on the eclectic Joys, mostly recorded under quarantine conditions at a farm outside Ant's native Sacramento. It was originally intended, like many of the album's songs, for a different project altogether – in this case, a nascent EP called I Can't Believe It's Not Power Pop. “For as grumpy as I am about the power pop genre for so many reasons, the catchy/jangly thing comes easy for me,” explains Anton. “You know, 12-string guitars and Hofner bass - the stuff of life. I do love a nice jangle, has to be said!” The lovely sound of the track bears that out: it stands with the most melodic output of Robyn Hitchcock or XTC, as chiming and harmony-laden as they come. It sounds like a band, but it's all Ant, all the time.

Anton's surreal wit here also places him in that company: the titular character's metahuman abilities include “leaving things as they are” and “leaving keys in the car”. The song lifts off in its bridge section, promising “summertime fun” in the form of a “film fest on drugs” featuring Yojimbo, Satyricon, and Breathless before launching into a guitar break worthy of Roger McGuinn. If it leaves you with the impression that Barbeau may have had a more rewardingly mind-expanding and playful lockdown than most, you're probably not wrong. Oh The Joys We Live For, out July 16 and featuring 11 more tracks, amply demonstrates just how far and wide Anton's creative ambitions can wander when forced to stay in one place, and what melodic rewards we can all reap from from his sedentary journey. The album is out July 16 on CD and digital platforms from Big Stir Records.
