“Rabid Hole” by WHELLIGAN (Merseyside, UK) is the new BIG STIR SINGLE, out this Friday October 23 everywhere music is sold or streamed and up for pre-order at
wwww.bigstirrecords.bandcamp.com/music now! As Single No. 101 it inaugurates a new and bigger phase for the singles series, and it's also our first co-release with GREAT SHEIKS MUSIC, the music production concern and occasional label of our own NICK FRATER, specializing in creating, recording and producing adventurous pop, psychedelia, soundtracks and similar ear-candy. This single, also featuring the B-side “Anyone Who Never Had A Heart”, fits that bill handsomely.
Whelligan is fronted by songwriter Jamie Whelligan. Having enjoyed BBC6 Music success with his recent side-project Annexe The Moon, he returns with his new single “Rabid Hole”. A tale of fake news, double-bluffs, media manipulation, confusion and vulnerability, set to a driving triplet back beat and sonic fairy dust. Magpie-eyed vocals harmonise over warm and wiry guitars, while inventive lyrics are matched with floating melodies.
With comparisons to Syd Barrett, Paul Heaton, The Rutles and Julian Cope, this sound is eclectic, melodic, and steeped in the traditions of Merseyside songwriting. Among his many musical activities Jamie Whelligan is a busker on London’s underground which shows in the strength, character and range of his voice. “When you’ve only got a few seconds to move someone with your performance, you learn to make every note count.” says Whelligan - we couldn't agree more.
With two albums and several EPs under his belt there is much to enjoy in his back catalogue. 2020 sees the first of a new crop of tunes, and a new album lined up for 2021.
Big Stir Records is proud to share this latest piece of Whelligan song-smithery with you, and are sure you’ll enjoy the trip down this rabbit hole.
