Big Stir Records announces the March 4 release of a new single from psych-rock-pop legend ANTON BARBEAU. “Rain, Rain,” an evocative slice of electro-pop making no secret of the influences of OMD and New Musik, is the first taste of what awaits on Anton's new and paradoxically-titled album POWER POP!!! It's up for preorder at
bigstirrecords.bandcamp.com now, and available everywhere music is sold or streamed on the release date.
Part of the album-closing trio of tunes to which Anton refers as “The Teen Suite”, “Rain, Rain” is a revisitation of a very early composition from the prolific psychedelic troubadour's catalog. It's lovingly rendered as an artifact of those times, recreated faithfully with Barbeau's current arsenal of vintage and modern synths and sounds, emerging utterly radio-ready for today as much as the new wave yesteryear of its genesis. And it's emblematic of the sound of the new record: POWER POP!!! is in many ways anything but what might be inferred from its title, as Ant does not shy away from critiques of the titular genre.
Always armed with the melodic gifts to stand with the guitar pop greats, Anton seeks to push further, not unlike his influences and contemporaries including Julian Cope (after whom a track on the new record is named), Robyn Hitchcock and Momus. Those ambitions are on fully display throughout the forthcoming album, the followup to Barbeau's 2021 hit Oh The Joys We Live For and the latest fascinating dispatch from the mind of the Sacramento-born avatar of acidic, quirky tunefulness. “Rain, Rain” sets the stage for the sound of the new album, but only hints at its textures and concerns, all of which will be on full display when the record debuts March 25 on Big Stir Records.
