Canterbury, England's renowned psych-pop stalwarts SPYGENIUS (and their LA-based home label Big Stir Records) are delighted to celebrate the band's live return to UK stages with a new surprise single. “Son Of The Morning, Go Man Go!” will see release worldwide digital release this Friday, May 20, and is up for pre-order at
bigstirrecords.bandcamp.com now. The street date falls in the midst of a series of gigs in Liverpool, Stourbridge, and at home in Canterbury, some alongside Big Stir labelmates from both sides of the Atlantic, including Amoeba Teen, Plasticsoul, Nick Frater, The Incurables and SpyderPop Records' own Lannie Flowers. And it's the first taste of a forthcoming full-length album from the band, yet to be announced (but just possibly available early to those lucky enough to attend the live shows in the coming weeks).
As a teaser for the new record, “Son Of The Morning, Go Man Go!” is vintage SPYGENIUS, and yet something new as well. It hums with touches of the '80s college rock sound and vintage '60s psych alike, alternately breezy and sinister 12-string jangle, and an effortless progression from its beautifully airy opening to darker, urgently galloping passages and an anthemic climax worthy of The Who. Much of that's expected from the band (guitarist/frontman PETER WATTS, bassist RUTH ROGERS, keyboard genius MATT BYRNE and drummer ALAN CANNINGS, all of whom combine for the band's signature harmonies), but there's something urgent and unsettled in the tune. It's intricate in its nearly folk-prog structure, and yet thoroughly accessible: it flows, its radio-ready sheen and supple melodies belying its darker undercurrents.
The single, and the upcoming album – you didn't hear it from us, but it's called JOBBERNOWL – represents an extremely rapid return for SPYGENIUS, whose late-2021 collection of tribute tracks SPYGENIUS BLOW THEIR COVERS is still racking up airplay worldwide. It's the proper followup to their ambitious 2021 double LP MAN ON THE SEA (Album of the Year at Here Comes The Flood), their fourth on Big Stir, and seventh overall since their early 21st Century formation. The band is clearly undergoing a creative renaissance, and there will be much more to say about the new album and its themes in due time. For now, it's time to crank up the single, head out to gigs after the long pandemic layoff, and take heart in the fact that SPYGENIUS are back, their surreal humour and melodic invention in full bloom. There is more to come, and Big Stir is excited to bring it to you... very soon indeed.
