about

Detroit garage rock superstars THE INCURABLES return with a new single for the end of 2023, and this time it's a sign of things to come in the New Year on the band's full-length debut for Big Stir Records! The all new track “When I Grow Up” follows recent hits like “Far Away,” “Back Into Eloise” and “Funhouse” -- all also featured on the new album – onto the global pop-rock airwaves and into the hearts of lovers of high-octane hooks on December 1.

The first official single from the forthcoming album Inside Out and Backwards kicks off with an opening guitar the lets you know that you are about to take a joy ride with the Motor City's own The Incurables behind the wheel. Buckle up as the rhythm section (cousins Ray and Darrin Lawson on bass and drums respectively) let you know that it’s going to be a white-knuckle trip. Pat Kelly’s vocals paint the picture of what may have been if the bully Butch from the Little Rascals had grown up to front a punk band in the seventies. Speaking of growing up, the lyrics appear to be from the perspective of a young man looking towards a future designed by 1950’s social expectations: “When I grow up, I’m gonna… be your man… get a job… get some land.”

Fortunately for us, The Incurables respond to this in three-part harmony: “Never gonna happen!” Halfway in, Pat rips out an equally angry lead that reminds us that we are listening to one of the best things to come out of a Detroit garage since the '68 Camaro. “This song could be our theme,” says Pat. “Continue to grow, but never grow up. We are fighting it all the way. The basic idea is to let your inner child out to play as often as you can.” It couldn't sound more honest than it does in this rip-roaring performance from a band entering their fourth decade with their original lineup and the energy of a band half their age.

“Sometimes a song just comes together with little effort. This was one of those songs. We wrote it in one night and recorded it in pretty much one take. As soon as we put it together, we started playing it live. It was an instant hit for us to play and for the fans to hear. The tone and attitude of the song was influenced by groups like The Ramones and Iggy and The Stooges.” That comes through loud and clear: “When I Grow Up” is ear stimulation that should always be played on eleven by a band that never takes themselves too seriously, but lets you know that you should. It is a must for every playlist and should be played on repeat until your ears bleed and your immortal soul is cleansed. And the best part is... there 's more to come in January on the new album that fans of THE INCURABLES have been demanding. The wait is almost over!
